Double Bass Workshop

We have another one of our deluxe plywood basses ready to go.  These are actually made by the Gliga company, then varnished by the Calin Wultur shop which is down the road from Gliga in Reghin Romania.   Recently these instruments in their standard form have been marketed as "Euro Basic" and come with an obnoxious orange lacquer finish.

Other than the nice varnish, another difference is the modification we make to the neck. The basses come with a very wide neck but we take the time to trim the neck/fingerboard to a comfortable width  before blending things in and re varnishing the neck heel and toe.  It's a lot of work but these are some of best sounding plywood basses I've run across. And as far as I know,  no other shop offering these instruments bothers with the neck mod so this is a unique offering.

Laminated top and back with carved maple ribs. String length right at 41".  Warm brown/reddish varnish.

We have a new Shen Willow Rogeri model. Carved, round back instrument with the back and sides made from willow.

Big sound pizz. or arco, but slightly darker in tone than the maple version. This bass moves some air.

We have a new, carved round back bass made by Shen. The maple Rogeri model usually has some flamed wood figure in the back and sides but this bass has plain maple figure, hence the 200 designation rather than 300 or 800.  An attractive instrument nonetheless with some quilted maple like figure in the back.

Resonant open A string with quick bow response for a new bass. Plenty of low end. This is a larger instrument and would be a great bass for a college orchestral player. Big jazz sound as well.

We have a rare Kay bass for sale.  According to Kay bass expert Roger Stowers less than 100 of these were made. Serial number #1753 dates this bass as a pre production model.

The condition is good.  There are a few missing laminate pieces which could be replaced to bring the bass to an excellent restored condition. The instrument was never used in the public schools. Some nice features includes a blonde finish with highly flamed maple, engraved tuning plates, carved  scroll, three piece neck with a center "skunk stripe" layer as well as prominent quilted maple figure in the neck.  Disclosure: a crack in the scroll chin has been repaired by this shop but the break was pinned correctly and the  reinforcement is not visible.

The playing setup has been improved. We installed a new ebony fingerboard,  new French bridge and a nice endpin.  Comes with an engraved Kay German bow dating from the original purchase (1938).

We usually have several Shen Sb80 basses for sale or rent.  All laminate construction and lacquer finish makes for a durable instrument, yet good sounding bass. And the same thorough  setup process is employed for these basses as with all the new instruments we offer.  Includes Shen cover.

The back is flat and incorporates an X brace design.  Search the web for numerous descriptions and discussions of this popular bass.   The size is easy to handle and the sloped shoulders allow access to the upper register.  Well suited for either jazz or classical playing.

We have a new carved roundback Panormo model bass from the Calin Wultur Workshop in Reghin Romania. This is an Elite series bass and represents their best work.  I've seen five Elite basses so far and I can safely say at this point that the Elite basses tend to be more free playing and responsive right away.

This instrument incorporates nicer wood as well, with unblemished spruce and flamed maple in the back, sides and neck. The neck displays a "chatoyance" effect and the wood figure appears to change as your perspective changes. A beautiful bass.

Unlike the flat back Carcassi copies popularized by the Kolstein shop this is a carved round back bass. Made from European spruce and maple and built in Reghin, Romania by the Calin Wultur workshop. The combination of wider lower and middle bouts, smaller upper bouts and deeper ribs offers a bass that has a nice low register but also eases access to the higher end of the fingerboard.  41 1/2" string length.
