new bass bar
Written by Vince Jesse

We installed a new bass bar for a smaller German shop bass. The bass had cracks right along the  bar at the top and bottom of the plate. The crack in the lower bout was ragged and a bit contaminated with yellow glue so we decided to reinforce the glued cracks with egg patches and fit the bar over them instead of the more generally accepted method of fitting the new bar over cleats.

While the top was off we also replaced some ragged plate edges, patched in spruce around the upper and lower block areas and  fit half - edging all around.

Doubling the Button
Written by Vince Jesse

This nice Romanian bass suffered a blow to the neck.  The back button broke out and stayed with the neck heel.

First we removed the button from the neck and glued it into the back.

Then we removed the back from the bass and fit a patch to reinforce the area.

After trimming.

The back was glued onto the bass and the neck reset.

The final result.

New neck for a Kay bass

We installed a new Engelhardt neck on a nice Kay bass from the Forties.

Final shaping of the neck and setting up the instrument to play:

The final result.  We took the opportunity to improve the neck angle and overstand.

Kay neck reinforcement

Here's one way of stiffening the thin neck of a Kay bass - using a carbon graphite bar.  Shown is the routing setup post cut, the carbon rod and the maple filler strip that goes over the top.

Center seam insert

Flat back basses can shrink over the width of the back.  An insert restores the original width of the back.

C extensions
Written by Vince Jesse

Here are examples of several low C extensions installed by the Double Bass Workshop.  Our easily removable design uses a single piece of ebony closely fitted to the scroll. Chromatic stops use intonation adjustable brass hardware made in the shop and ebony fingers sealed for minimal wood movement.
